PPG Manor Hall Eggshell
It is no secret that Just Add Paint loves this paint. We discovered PPG’s Manor Hall by accident in the Walden Development, when all else was failing over very rough chalky walls the builders had left us with. Sherwin Williams had recently gone through a formula change on our beloved Cashmere which had complicated our lives. Upon a customer’s insistence, we were tasked with trying this paint over these incredibly challenging surfaces – and we have never looked back.
Professional painters need a go to wall paint that will work well across a wide variety of surfaces. PPG Manor Hall does just that, and has served us well over everything from low-end builders paint to a semi-gloss wall paint. Manor Hall is also has great coverage, is durable, and touches up better than most for years to come. Manor Hall’s best feature, in our opinion, the the even sheen in the eggshell version. The sheen is just enough to provide a smoothness to the walls, while not accentuating every little imperfection. It is one of the few paints we have tested that seems to soak in evenly regardless of the surface it is being applied over. The price point doesn’t hurt either, as this paint is far less expensive than much of the competition (typically $40 range for the average consumer). This brings us to our next paint…
Sherwin Williams Emerald Flat
Step 1 for using Sherwin Williams Emerald in Flat is to digest the price point. The shelf price for non-contractors is around $70, however, a Sherwin account will get you a sizable discount. Sherwin Williams also runs quarterly specials on Emerald, which will save you 30 and sometimes as much as 40%. Is this paint worth the money? Absolutely – if what you are looking for is a wipeable flat finish that will look great and touch up for years. Make no mistake, Emerald flat is not bullet proof and can still burnish with heavy cleaning. But the durability of Emerald is second to none, and is the only true flat we have found that does not let us down when it is time for cleaning.
Another great feature of Sherwin Williams Emerald is its lack of VOC content. We always consider Emerald in health conscious homes with customers wanting a top notch paint flat. The stain blocking ability and coverage are especially surprising when you consider how environmentally conscious the formula is. Other areas one might consider Emerald are for drastic color changes, walls that are dirty and you are trying to avoid a separate prime coat, and anywhere one is chasing the elusive “one-coat special”. As professionals, we rarely, if ever apply a single coat to the walls. But is this is what you are striving for, emerald flat paint will give you your best chance.
PPG Wall Supreme Flat
Wall Supreme flat is the perfect choice for anyone on a budget looking for a high hide finish. Durability is not Wall Supreme’s strong point, but it does have at least some burnish resistance. The color hold out is better than most, and makes up for lack of durability with easy touch-up on a damaged wall. And the coverage is stellar for the cost (low $30s shelf price, much less with an account). This paint works wonders over the kind of beat up walls one would see in apartment or closet, covering even the dirtiest of dirty.
One other place we love to use this paint is on ceilings. The flat paint melts into the surface seamlessly so roller marks are never visible enough to draw attention. The high solids content also makes Wall Supreme a wonderful step up from builders grade for spray application. And lastly, the “true flat” nature of this paint makes it one of the most forgiving we have come across. We highly recommend this paint for both pros and DIYers alike.
Honorable Mention
Benjamin Moore paints do not usually make into our rotation due to lack of local vendors. However, ColorMAXX in Carlisle, PA is looking to change that. The price point on Benjamin Moore products in general is a little higher and less discounted than most, but the quality is exceptional. We have had great experiences with Regal Select (wall paints in flat and eggshell) and Aura (top of the line with stellar coverage). Our local hardware stores carry Benjamin Moore but have a hard time keeping up with the demands of a contractor. But ColorMAXX has great customers service and is well stocked with a quick turnaround time at the counter.
